VPHCAP Re-designated as WOAH Collaborating Centre for Veterinary Services Capacity Building

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has officially re-designated the Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety Centre for Asia Pacific (VPHCAP), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, as a Collaborating Centre for Veterinary Services Capacity Building (Asia, the Far East, and Oceania) for the period 2026–2030. This renewal highlights VPHCAP’s sustained contributions in strengthening veterinary services and fostering regional and global collaboration since its first designation in 2016.

Participation in CMU Curriculum Quality Development Training

On 18 July 2025, VPHCAP Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Duangporn Pichpol and Asst. Prof. Dr. Siriporn Khumsup, Associate Dean for Education, joined the training on curriculum quality development organized by Chiang Mai University at U-Nimman Hotel, Chiang Mai. The program aimed to enhance staff competencies in curriculum design and strengthen CMU’s educational mission.

Participation in Chiang Mai Provincial Food Safety Committee Meeting 2025

On 16 July 2025, VPHCAP Director Asst. Prof. Dr. Duangporn Pichpol joined the Chiang Mai Provincial Food Safety Committee Meeting 2025 at the Chiang Mai Provincial Public Health Office. The meeting emphasized cross-sector collaboration to strengthen food safety and consumer protection in Chiang Mai.

Local Evaluation Meeting Report of the Global Health Project in Lao PDR

The Global Health Project (GHP) in Lao PDR, supported by Chiang Mai University, VPHCAP, PODD Centre, the Department of Livestock Development of Thailand, and the Department of Livestock and Fisheries of Lao PDR, conducted a Local Evaluation Meeting in Luang Prabang from 22–27 September 2024. The workshop brought together central, provincial, district, and community-level representatives to evaluate the use of the Participatory One Health Disease Detection (PODD / OHTK) system for animal disease surveillance. More than 100 participants, including officials and volunteer veterinarians from five provinces and ten districts, joined the event to share lessons learned, present achievements, and strengthen cross-border collaboration.

The ISAH & SEAOHUN International Conference 2024, themed “One Health in Action – Innovations in Health, Welfare and Environment for Sustainable Animal Production,” will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 16–20 September 2024, including a pre-conference workshop on 16–17 September and the main conference from 18–20 September, hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University.

Training of Trainers: PODD Application in Lao PDR

The Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety Centre for Asia Pacific (VPHCAP), Chiang Mai University, together with national and international partners, organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) program in Lao PDR under the Global Health Project. The training introduced the Participatory One Health Disease Detection (PODD) system to enhance community-based animal health surveillance and support early detection and rapid response to disease outbreaks.

The 13th Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) Meeting of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) and the Regional Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation

The 13th Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) Meeting of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) and the Regional Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation took place from 30 October to 3 November 2023 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The event brought together more than 200 participants from 35 countries to exchange knowledge, share innovations, and strengthen commitments to sustainability and resilience in livestock systems.

Training for Trainers on Early Detection and Rapid Response Using PODD Application – Lao PDR

On 3–4 October 2023, VPHCAP, as part of the Global Health Project under the Participatory One Health Digital Disease Detection (PODD) Program, conducted a Training for Trainers in Khammuan Province, Lao PDR. The training focused on building local capacity to use the PODD application for community-based surveillance of animal diseases.

Food Safety and Sanitation Training for Street Food Handlers – Food Safety: CMU Project

On 23 August 2023, VPHCAP and CMU partners conducted a training course on “Food Safety and Sanitation for Food Handlers in the Food Safety: CMU Street Food Project” at Chiang Mai Grand View Hotel. The training engaged local street food vendors around CMU in building knowledge, hygiene practices, and developing hygienic food stall prototypes.

From 7–25 August 2023, VPHCAP, in collaboration with the Colombo Plan and TICA, hosted the Online International Training Course on “Food Safety and Security from Animal Origin: Strengthening the Network for Sustainability.” The program brought together participants from multiple countries to enhance knowledge and collaboration on food safety and security issues.

Food Safety and Sanitation Training for Food Handlers – Food Safety: CMU Project

On 25 July 2023, VPHCAP and its CMU partners organized a training course on “Food Safety and Sanitation for Food Handlers in the Food Safety: CMU Street Food Project” at Chiang Mai Grand View Hotel. The training aimed to strengthen hygiene and food safety practices among local food stall entrepreneurs and to develop prototypes of hygienic food stalls.

On 29 June 2023, the Global Health Project working group under the Participatory One Health Digital Disease Detection (PODD) Program met with provincial coordinators of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Lao PDR, to plan the implementation of a digital tool for reporting and tracking animal diseases.

The Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety Centre for Asia Pacific (VPHCAP), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, conducted an online workshop featuring Prof. Dr. Thomas Alter, Managing Director of the Institute of Food Safety and Food Hygiene, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. Prof. Dr. Alter delivered a lecture on “How to Conduct Good Research and Publish Your First Paper” via Zoom, sharing valuable insights and practical guidance for young researchers and graduate students.

Recognizing the critical link between food safety and food security, VPHCAP organized the short course “Food Safety and Security from Animal Origin: Strengthening the Network for Sustainability.” The course aimed to build and exchange knowledge and skills on food production, safety along the food chain, surveillance and monitoring, and international food regulations. Global Health Institute – Thailand 2018 & The 5th Food Safety and Zoonoses Symposium for Asia Pacific

The Global Health Institute (GHI) – Thailand has been organized annually by the Veterinary Public Health Centre for Asia Pacific, Chiang Mai University, in collaboration with international partners since 2012, with a strong focus on the One Health approach. The 2018 program, held from 2–13 July, aimed to strengthen technical skills and foster collective action for public health, food security, and ecosystem health. Activities included a pre-conference training course, the 5th Food Safety and Zoonoses Symposium for Asia Pacific, and post-conference training courses.

Manuscript Writing Workshop for 7 Batch MVPH Students

International Training on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Analysis for Disease Outbreak Investigation

The study of spatio-temporal disease distribution is a fundamental aspect of epidemiology, as neglecting spatial and temporal dimensions can lead to significant biases and misinterpretations. This course introduced the basic principles of geographical information systems (GIS) and spatio-temporal analysis, highlighting their value in improving the precision of both qualitative and quantitative assessments of disease outbreaks.

Culling Practices, Disposal Approaches and Compensation Policies for Poultry Disease Control in Lower Mekong

The Regional Meeting on Culling Practices, Disposal Approaches, and Compensation Policies for Poultry Disease Control in the Lower Mekong was held on 20–21 July 2017 at the Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square Hotel, Thailand. The meeting brought together 15 participants from government and private sectors representing five Lower Mekong countries: Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia.

Every April, Thailand—and several other Southeast Asian countries—celebrates Songkran, the traditional New Year according to the lunar calendar. Beyond traveling home to visit family, many Thais mark the occasion by making merit together at temples, beginning the year with a sense of goodness and joy.

The Workshop "Poultry Meat Safety...from Slaughterhouses to Consumers"

The workshop “Poultry Meat Safety…from Slaughterhouses to Consumers” was held on 17 December 2016 with participation from stakeholders representing both small- and large-scale slaughterhouses. The program featured keynote presentations on food security in Thailand, farm and slaughterhouse standards, and laboratory findings on common foodborne pathogens in slaughtering production lines, followed by a collaborative brainstorming session.

The Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Assoc. Global Health Institute – Thailand 2016

Global Health Institute – Thailand 2016 (GHIT) provided One Health leadership training along with specialized short courses on key skills such as risk analysis and participatory epidemiology. The two-week program also featured a research conference that highlighted the latest scientific updates on emerging diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and food safety.

The 4th Food Safety and Zoonoses Symposium for Asia Pacific

The 2015 international symposium served as a pre-global congress to the International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface (ICOPHAI) on One Health for Sustainable Development. Launched by the Veterinary Public Health and Biotechnology (VPH-Biotech) Global Consortium, the event addressed critical challenges related to the EcoHealth–One Health nexus and the need for strengthened capacity building.

International Symposium on 10th Year Anniversary of VPHCAP

In recognition of many years of dedicated and diligent work, VPHCAP celebrated its 10th Anniversary to highlight the achievements of the center and the successes of its collaborative networks. The celebration was organized around both local and international academic activities designed to generate innovative knowledge, facilitate the exchange of experiences, and strengthen networking among experts and academic scientists. The focus was on advancing collaboration and research in food safety, zoonoses, and the EcoHealth/One Health approach.
